Race. Gender. Class in Media
Women’s and Gender Studies 095 Z2 / Speech
095
Burlington
University of Vermont
CE 5:00 - 7:30 T #90619
Description
This course is meant to be a survey introduction to a variety of
issues related to the representations of identities such as gender,
race, class, sexual orientation, and ethnicity in the mass media.
The goal of the course is to familiarize students with the breadth
of these issues while at the same time providing tools to critically
analyze and engage modern media and mediums. The course is comprised
of viewing, analyzing, and discussing mass mediated forms such as
television, film, music, sports, news, advertising and new media
and how these forms represent different identity categories to what
effect. An underlying understanding within the course is a recognition
of the inextricable interconnections between gender, race, ethnicity,
class, sexual orientation and so forth. Therefore, the course is
invested in exploring the ways in which differences in identity
produce different mediated representations and experiences of media.
Students will also get an opportunity to produce their own media
presentation and project. My hope is that by the end of the course,
students will be more media literate.

in order to find an answer? Is intention enough? Who is the audience?
If no one claps, but Tinkerbelle believes in herself, does she get to
live?
